What is Mental First Aid Certificate
1 in 4 people approximately in the UK will experience a mental health condition. At least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people performing at their best. Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination . Research has shown that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. The HSE guidance ‘First aid needs assessment’ refers to mental health in the workplace. The Mental First Aid training provides training for your staff to assist with mental health issues.
What skills do you need to be a Mental Health First Aider?
It is important that people are happy to carry out this role. First aider may be taken away from their job role for periods of time to deal with people who may need their help. It needs to be someone who your employees find approachable. It can be a very overwhelming role due to the nature of the conversations they may have. Their job is not to diagnose or treat but to recognise and signpost. It will need to be someone that can be trusted by staff. A be able to cope with listening to what could be distressing issues.
FAA LEVEL 1 AWARD IN AWARENESS OF FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (RQF)
This is a half day course and is suitable for all employees. It is designed to give a basic awareness of mental health conditions and to encourage employees to start conversations with each other regarding mental health issues. Price for individuals is £50. Please contact me for bookings of more than 5 people for a group price. Even though people attending this course may not be the allocated to be a first aider it will give them the confidence to notice someone who may be struggling and to help them or advice them to speak to the mental first aider.
FAA LEVEL 2 AWARD IN FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (RQF)
This one day course is ideal for Mental Health First aiders. It gives a more detailed insight into mental health. You will, as the First aider, be able to identify suspected conditions. It will also cover devising a Mental Health action plan. Drugs and alcohol awareness are also an addition on this course with is not discussed in Level 1. The course price is £80 but again contact me for bookings over 5 people.
FAA LEVEL 3 AWARD IN SUPERVISING FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (RQF)
This 2 day course provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a wide range of mental health conditions and learn about the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers. They will know how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. It will help you recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse. You will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and understand how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace. This will not enable you to diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.
